Why Massage Works: Thixotropy

The concept of thixotropy boils down to easing into a substance (or this case

body) allows for a deeper depth to be reached.

When you try to force your way into a substance (tissue) you can expect that it will be rejected.

During your massage your muscles becomes a playground.

Carefully and intuitively your massage therapist can apply pressure to stimulate a neurological response in the body.

The more your muscular guard is let down the easier it is to have what you know as a deep tissue massage.

For example, during myofascial release, the movements are done with less oil and firm downward pressure.

Essentially the body, with this slow deep pressure, will allow the practitioner’s tool (hand, knuckle, forearm) to glide down and into the body.

It's as if the body is pulling the tool into the places that need a little extra TLC (tender love and care).

However, you should alwasy speak up if the pressure feels like it is too much or not enough.

Your massage therapist is learning your body at the same time, and it is not offensive to tell them what you prefer and or what is not working.
